Generator-Powered Water Pump VFD Selection
A water pump VFD can run from a generator if the generator provides stable voltage and enough capacity for the pump load. The VFD reduces motor starting shock compared with direct starting, but the generator still must handle input current, acceleration demand and changing pump load.

What Must Be Confirmed?

Selection Logic
The generator must be checked from the input side. Even though the VFD soft-starts the pump, it draws power from the generator as the motor accelerates and water load increases. If generator voltage dips, the VFD may report undervoltage, overcurrent or acceleration-related faults.
Avoid judging by generator kVA alone. Power factor, load response, governor performance and other connected loads can affect stability. A lightly built generator may show normal voltage at no load but drop sharply when the pump starts moving water.
The VFD should be configured with reasonable ramp time and motor data. Fast acceleration asks the generator for power too quickly. Slow acceleration can help, but it cannot compensate for an undersized or unstable generator.
