How to Match VFDs with Different Water Pump Motors

Match each VFD to the motor's rated voltage, current and type before considering pump control. Motors with the same kW can need different output current or control modes. The pump curve and safe speed range then determine how the drive should operate.
What Information Is Required?
- Every motor nameplate and winding connection.
- Induction or PMSM motor type and available motor data.
- Supply voltage, phase and frequency.
- Pump curve, minimum flow and maximum safe speed.
- Ambient temperature, altitude and motor-cable length.
Selection Example
Two 4 kW motors are rated 8.5 A and 10 A. Select from continuous output current, not the shared kW label. If one motor is PMSM, also confirm compatible control and identification data. Validate both on their real pumps.
Common Mistakes
- Building the product matrix from kW only.
- Copying PMSM settings to an induction motor.
- Ignoring dual-voltage winding connections.
- Using one minimum speed for different pump hydraulics.
- Forgetting environmental derating.
