3kW 230V Single-Phase Input VFD for a Hotel Booster Pump

A 3kW hotel booster pump can run from a 230V single-phase input VFD when the pump motor is a compatible three-phase 220–230V motor and the drive output current covers the motor nameplate current. The VFD output is three-phase; a single-phase pump motor is not automatically suitable.

What Must Be Confirmed?
- Motor voltage, current, frequency and star/delta connection.
- Maximum hotel demand, static head and target pressure.
- Sensor range and installation point.
- Input breaker, cable capacity and supply-voltage stability.
- Whether one pump or a duty/standby pair is required.
Selection Logic
Do not select by 3kW alone. Compare the motor rated current with the VFD continuous output current. Single-phase input current is higher than the three-phase motor line current, so the feeder and breaker need a separate check. Enter the motor nameplate data, scale the pressure sensor correctly, and use gradual acceleration to limit pipe shock.
Common Mistakes
- Connecting a 380V-only motor to a normal 230V-class VFD.
- Assuming the output is single-phase because the input is single-phase.
- Ignoring the high current drawn from the 230V feeder.
- Using a pressure setpoint without checking the pump curve.
