A constant pressure pump VFD can regulate pump speed, but a pressure tank is still useful in many booster systems. The tank helps buffer small water demand, reduce rapid pressure changes and support stable sleep and wake operation.

What Must Be Confirmed?

Selection Logic

The VFD controls the pump, while the pressure tank helps the water system absorb small demand changes. Without a tank, a tiny leak or short tap opening may force the pump to wake often. This can create frequent starts, unstable pressure and unnecessary wear.

The tank does not need to be oversized automatically. A correctly selected small tank may be enough for buffering and sleep/wake stability. The pre-charge should match the operating pressure strategy. If it is wrong, the tank may provide little useful volume.

For multi-pump systems, a tank can also soften pressure changes when assist pumps start or stop. It does not replace correct PID tuning, pump staging logic or check valve design.
