A PMSM water pump requires a VFD with the correct motor-control mode and a verified parameter set. Rated voltage, current, frequency and speed are not enough by themselves; the supplier may also need pole pairs, back-EMF or flux-related data, resistance, inductance and permitted speed range. What Information Is Required?
- Complete PMSM motor data sheet and nameplate.
- Pole pairs, rated speed and maximum permitted speed.
- Phase resistance, inductance and motor-control data available from the motor supplier.
- Rotor-position or sensorless control requirement.
- Pump curve, pressure/flow range and minimum safe speed.

Selection Example
For a 4kW, 380V PMSM pump, select the VFD by motor current and control compatibility. Enter the manufacturer’s PMSM data and complete the approved identification or tuning procedure with the pump in a safe test condition. Limit speed to the motor and pump’s permitted range, then tune the pressure loop on a hydraulic test bench.
If reliable PMSM data is unavailable, do not copy parameters from another motor with the same kW. Two 4kW PMSM designs can require different control values.

Why This Configuration?
PMSM control depends on the actual motor’s electrical characteristics. A controlled OEM parameter-release process prevents undocumented changes between samples and bulk orders. Supporting both PMSM and induction-motor configurations can also help a pump manufacturer standardize its VFD family, but each approved motor still needs its own validated parameter set.
Expected Result and Acceptance Checks
Expected behavior is stable starting, controlled current, correct rotation and repeatable pressure control across the approved pump range. Acceptance records should include motor temperature, current, speed, pressure, flow, low-demand sleep/wake and protective trips. No efficiency or energy-saving figure should be published without a defined test method and measured data.

- Treating PMSM setup as identical to induction-motor setup.
- Copying parameters between motors based only on kW.
